Growing up on the coast of Maine, in a town that was nearly an island, I understood from an early age what the term “sea legs” meant. For anyone unfamiliar, the wake of the ocean makes walking on the deck of a ship feel wobbly, uncomfortable, and shaky at best. Still, with a bit of effort and tightening of muscles, we get our sea legs and walking gradually becomes manageable. With locked knees and braced hips we can amble from bow to stern without issue. It may not feel the same as walking on land, but it’s walking; no doubt about it. The pandemic feels like a sea of uncertainty, and right now we’re all hoping for the calm at the end of the storm. Some are just tossing their life preservers overboard. Others have closed their eyes and decided to pretend this is all a dream. Most of us are scanning the endless sea for a glimpse of that safe horizon. We’re not there yet, and that truth stings, but we can’t let it sink us. It’s time to get our sea legs. If I had a daisy for every time I’ve benefited from my white privilege, I would have an endless meadow. For far too long I’ve carelessly wandered through this field, head in the clouds, mindlessly gathering. I can’t un-walk my carefree steps. I can’t un-pick these flowers that were never meant to be mine, but I can take action. With every step forward I can plant new seeds, fertilized by the truth that Black Lives Matter, watered by an unwavering rain of justice for those killed, imprisoned, and subjected to police violence and legalized slavery in our prisons. I will work every day to pluck the weeds of prejudice and discrimination that are rooted within me. For every thorn of hate that I find, I’ll plant a seed of truth. ✊🏼🌱
